Summer Flamingo Card

So apparently yesterday was Barefoot Day which makes that the theme for Crazy 4 Challenges. Which suits me fine as I regard socks as torture devices only to be worn when desperate! That means I’m barefoot anytime I’m inside and as much of the year as I can manage outside.

All the papers are from Authentique, a pack called Utopia. The flamingo is an Echo Park die that I cut from more patterned paper. To make the dots not quite so prominent, I added some Worn Lipstick Distress ink. Then it was a bit too plain pink so I added some orange, just a touch, with Marmalade to mimic the flowers. I hand cut the monstera leaf, I just love those, don’t you? So vibrant in colour and organic in shape! The hibiscus flower (or whatever it is) is a wood veneer accent that I coloured. I filled the Polaroid-style frame from Simon Says with various Lucy’s Sequins. The aren’t as bright as the flamingo but that’s ok as I wanted the flamingo to stand out anyway. And they do look brighter IRL.

I hope you can find something in your stash that is barefoot so you can play along. Basically any bird or animal that isn’t dressed in some sort of outfit with shoes will work so hopefully you have lots to choose from! Even some sea creatures in shells have a ‘foot’, snails do too! Flip Flops and Sunshine!

This week for Crazy 4 Challenges, we were asked to make a card with a summer destination theme! Yeah, I could make summer cards all year round (and sometimes I do!!!) BEACH BABY!Yeah!

I recently got some new dies from Echo Park including this lovely retro swimsuit and flamingo! Aren’t they so fun! I also won a $20 gift certificate to Avery Elle and after much difficult decision making (have you seen their website?? It’s da bomb dot com!!) and throwing a few extra bucks into the mix, I came away with some amazing products including the sweet Bunting stamps and dies!

The background paper is from Summer Dreams also by Echo Park. This paper is so pretty I decided to make an oversized card (4.5x5.75” I think) so maximize it’s gorgeousness. Around the edges I used a tracing wheel and a gel pen to create some faux stitching. If you’ve never seen one, it looks like this…

You can get them at any sewing store but they do come smooth too, for finer, thinner fabrics, so be careful which one you buy. I’ve also got one with less defined teeth and they won’t pierce paper so check the ones you see and get the wickedest looking teeth you can get! Use a foam mat under the paper and when you are done, you can sew by hand if you wish or just trace the line with a gel pen! If you prefer zigzags, just run a second line of holes next to the first and connect them with a ziggy line!

Isn’t that banner so cute!? The die set comes with a super fine ‘string’ for hanging all of the cute bunting bits. I glued my twine to it to get a really nice arc in it. The circle die cut is Triple Tear from Spellbinders which I sponged with some matching inks. Well, actually I inked first and cut second! The flamingo, glasses and swimsuit are all sponged lightly along their edges to help them stand out more. For the wing, I used the negative die cut as a stencil! It was the perfect shape!

The legs and beak were coloured with Copics. This busy mama ain’t got no time for cutting in multiple colours when I can help it! Ditto for the glasses, that’s turquoise paper under the dark brown lenses (I know, it looks black). I even did that with the word panels. I’d planned to piece in some coloured cardstock but when the die didn’t cut all the way through, I just decided to carefully ink the letters with a Copic marker. Worked out really well and it was faster too! No piecing those tiny letters and especially the even tinier centers of some letters! At the end, I added a bit of white gel pen on the flamingo and sunglasses. Swimsuits aren’t very shiny so I left the gel pen off. A couple of matching sequins and I was all set for the beach!

TIP: Did you guys know that Copic just came out with a fine tip nib for the Sketch marker? I KNOW RIGHT??? I bought 5 packs (of 3) that very same day! Get them at Imagination International. The email I got said supply was limited so hurry on over!

Summer’s End Card

I can’t believe the summer is almost over. Only a couple weeks left! Where did it all go? There were so many things I wanted to do and I hate winter with a passion.

So this card represents what I’d like to do with the little bit of summer that’s left. Go on a road trip! I’m not sure where but we just bought a new van! YEAH! So I think once we actually pick it up, a driving trip is something we need to try! Armed with iPads and tablets of course!

I was stamping SUMMER randomly around the card when I smudged ink on the VW. So I had to place another stamp and a sticker over top. Does it work?

Thank You Teacher Card

School ends at the end of June here in Ontario. So many other bloggers are already past this stage with their kids but our last day of school is today.

This one was inspired by Retro Sketches 169. I’m also entering this in the SSS Wednesday Challenge Anything Goes.

The papers are older October Afternoon papers called Schoolhouse. This is a pretty basic card but it was fun to make. I kept it free of too many embellies but I did add Gl;ossy Accents to the third apple.

Ombre Butterfly

I was inspired by another Retro Sketches sketch and an ombre challenge (don’t remember which one) for this card but they have ended.

But, I also made this one for the Memory Box butterfly challenge.

And it is still going! The pink part of the butterfly is painted with watercolours. Then I added the outline butterfly on top.

I’m also entering this in the SSS Anything Goes challenge.

Warning, Many Cards…

I have been playing quite a few challenges lately but always seem to run out of time to blog the cards before the deadline! Well, I finally found some time and actually remembered so this is one of a few posts with cards I’m entering. sorry to post so much all at once!

This was for three challenges, two of which have ended sadly. JUGS challenge to use layered die cuts and Retro Sketches 168. But, the Curtain Call challenge is still open! yeah!

Most of this is pretty straight forward. On the kraft layer, I inked it with Distress ink and applied light moulding paste to the edge to mimic the frothy front edge of waves. The sides of the card were sponged through a stencil using the same colour ink as the cardstock.

I’m also entering this in the SSS Wednesday Challenge Anything Goes.

Vacation Island for Mojo Monday

I got some new Kaisercraft paper and it was so fun to play with it.

My mojo has been a bit low lately; I’ve been doing so much organization, it’s kind of sapped my creative energy. But as I worked on this, I just got more and more happy. I have to make a note to myself that anytime I’m not inspired I should go to this paper pad!

To make the sun set background, I used Distress Markers. To make sure that the colours blended, I spritzed the stamp then dabbed off the area where the colours meet. Then I spritzed again. I love the effect! I stamped on the island using my MISTI to line everything up. It wasn’t perfect but it was user error. The MISTI placed the stamps exactly where I aligned them. I love this tool and it is totally worth the cost.

The card was sprayed with gold Glimmer mist when I was done and it looks great! Shame it doesn’t show up. I also added a few brushstrokes of Rock Candy Distress Crackle Paint. You can’t see it very well as the angle isn’t right and the cracks are very fine but it does add a bit more texture. The button was don a while ago so I don’t remember what I did too well but I remember adding Copic airbrushing to change the colour. Then the ink stayed tacky so I covered it with, I think, Glossy Accents. The finish ended up kinda cracked and textured which was really cool. The charm is covered in Sharpie paint pen to change it from silver to gold.

Rainbow Butterfly Canvas

I was inspired by the Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge blog to make this canvas. The challenge was to make something starting with the letter B.

Then the Wednesday challenge’s theme was Things that Fly. How perfect! I used a canvas board from the Dollar store that I prepped a while  ago. I started with some patterned paper strips which you really can’t see but they do add some texture. I covered that with gesso. Then I randomly added some texture paste using three different Prima stencils. Then I experimented with the new Prima line of art supplies, using the white crackle paste to apply a thin, splotchy, uneven layer over the canvas, adding a bit more in blobs near the edges. I left it that way until I decided what I wanted to do with it.

I’m a big fan of Laura Bassen and her love of rainbows has worn off on me. So I went with a bold fun paint scheme. Usually when I do mixed media art, I use Golden Fluid Acrylic paints which are much higher quality than craft paint. But I didn’t have all the colours I needed so I went with some craft paint. Wow, what a difference. Besides the opacity (fluid acrylics are somewhat translucent), there was a huge difference in drying time and workability.

I can keep adding water and move the fluid paints around almost indefinitely while the craft paints didn’t react to the water in the same way. You can see the difference near the stencilling. In the purple and pink areas, the fluid paint pooled nicely just like I wanted it to. But the craft paint didn’t thin out in the same way so it covered everything more equally for a less dynamic effect. But if you want opacity, the craft paints are great!

I randomly stamped a couple background stamps without using a block which makes it patchy and uneven. The butterflies were created by stamping on die cuts of Art Parts Clear Film. I made the stamp using Quikutz stamping foam which I die cut using a Memory box die. Then I cut the art film with the matching solid die and stamped it with Staz-On ink. Then you form the butterflies into any shape you want with a heat gun.

You can’t keep it too close or it will start to shrink but it can take quite a bit of heat from a bit further back. The die cut bodies and antennae from black cardstock and covered them with black Liquid Pearls. The middles sunk for some reason but I liked how it looked anyways. More insect like and less perfect. The word was hand drawn, cut from cardstock and covered with white Glossy Accents.

Shabby Chic Tag

I am in LOVE with these Julie Nutting doll stamps. They take a while to either colour or paper piece but the results are really worth it.

I love how the hair turned out on this one. I think I used E53,55,57 and maybe E49 for the very darkest areas. It’s hard to see the very fine detail but the legs are also paper pieced which is why the colour is different from the skin I usually colour. I added Copics for shading that matched the paper’s tone. In case you are wondering, yes, this is a very large stamp. I handmade the tag but it is close to a large standard tag, about 6.5” x 3”.

The paper is from an older Webster’s Pages; background (made of several papers), lobster paper (distressed and covered with Rock Candy crackle paint) and the paper piecing papers all come from the paper pack. I carefully cut out the paper around the tag reinforcer so it would show through. The little boats were coloured with Copics too.

I messed up the stamping of the feet, I got a double line, so I made the shoes slightly higher to cover that up. The stars are covered with a Wink Of Stella pen. The sand is a product called Mudd Puddles; it’s basically sand in glue in a small jar so you can apply it like molding paste. It doesn’t apply as smoothly but it is fun.

Watercolour Poppies

I recently bought this stamp set used (love the cost savings!!) and I was eager to try it out. I needed a couple thinking of you cards anyway and I LOVE this Thinking of You sentiment from Simon Says Stamp.

I used Twinkling H2Os for the background. It is subtle but pretty and shimmery. I used green at the base of the poppies, blue at the top and turquoise at the bottom. I originally die cut the flowers with the matching dies but I wasn’t a fan of the white edge so I trimmed them by hand. Especially when layered over the stems which were not die cut.

I stamped the flowers in Distress ink but the results were splotchy on the watercolour paper so I smoothed them with a wet paint brush. Then I added some more colour from the ink pad smooshed on my craft sheet to add some depth. I’m afraid that doesn’t show very well in the photo. I added some black accents with a C9 and 100 (black) Copic marker.

To finish the card, I added some crocheted lace and twine. The watercolour panel was layered on an aqua card base stamped with the script stamp from the poppy set.

I’m really sorry to have posted so infrequently lately. Summer was really busy and I’ve been suffering with a really bad case of frozen shoulder. I have a lot of pain and very limited range of motion. So a huge thank you to all of you who have stuck with me and not unsubscribed!

Love This Kite Card for Unscripted Sketches

I decided that I was going to embellish each of the horizontal lines on the sketch rather than leaving them plain. I adore the ‘love this’ font. It’s from a new SSS stamp set I got in a card kit.

My First Unscripted Sketches Post as a DT Member!

Although it was announced last week, I am proud to let you all know for the first time here that I am a DT member of Unscripted Sketches!

I am so excited and thrilled to have been accepted. I haven’t been on a DT since I was preggy with Teddy and he is almost two! So it’s awesome that I was accepted to the first team I tried out for! Yahoo! So without further ado…

I mustn’t be too bright because until I read the design team requirements, I didn’t realize that the ‘unscripted’ part of Unscripted Sketches means you have free reign to make any project you like, adjust the proportions, flip, rotate or alter the sketch if you find it more inspiring to do so. As long as you link to our challenge and have a design that we can still tell came from our sketch, it’s all good! I love that freedom! So much more fun!

Sea Shell Mixed Media Canvas

I ADORE anything beachy or ocean-related and I was in desperate need of some decor for my powder room AND I’m learning to do mixed media so this is what I created!

It also happens to be perfect for this week’s SSS Monday Challenge Blog to create something with a nautical theme!

I used die cut paper, lace, washi, glitter and charms to create little spots of interest on the sides of the canvas.

You can see the shells I stamped. Because they were stamped with dye ink on acrylic paint, they didn’t dry so I clear embossed them. Since they didn’t stand out as much as I had hoped, I added some Faber-Castel Big Brush pen and smudged it in to accent them just a bit.

The stamps are part of a sheet of rubber I bought so sorry, I don’t know who created them. Maybe Rubber Buggy Bumpers? They are out of business now. The background is music paper and book paper in three languages (French and Dutch) on top of a canvas board and then covered in gesso and paint.

Watermelon Card for Papertrey Ink Blog Hop

Welcome to another Papertrey Ink Blog Hop. This month the focus was luscious, mouth-watering summer fruit colour combos. I was missing many of the colours of inks and papers used in the combos so this truly was a challenge for me!

First I had planned on using this one and omitting the new leaf which I DO NOT like. The challenge did say we didn’t have to use every colour. I planned to make a 3-D, triple-scoop ice cream cone with dies and stamp some gorgeous berry sorbet and GOLD! swirls behind. Oh yeah! But I had NO harvest gold paper. Maybe the colour is too new to be in my multi pack I bought and rely on heavily? I’m still switching over from SU! to PTI as my main source of cardstock. I have no scraps either and don’t remember using any as card bases (the only way I’d not have any scraps) so I guess that must be it. I will have to write down my idea (I guess i just did, didn’t I? hee hee) and make it later!

I usually get to the card right away, sorry! Here it is finally! The colour and inspiration photo is below. I don’t usually take a lot of inspiration from colour challenge photos but I was kind of stumped on a way to use these colours especially since I don’t have any raspberry fizz, limeade ice or new leaf ink.

Waltzing Mouse Stamps Blog Party–Summer Shells Box

This month’s challenge was Summertime Fun. Since I won a free set from some challenge back in October and I finally chose it (I had been waiting to order some stamps at the same time and get a deal on shipping, never happened… ), I had fun using My Island.

I absolutely ADORE the beach and hot weather so this set and this challenge is so perfect for me! I wanted to do something more than just a card but I hate trying to decide what to do. As I looked around my craft room, this little box was just sitting there asking to be decorated!

I pulled out some favourite old MME papers which colours remind me of the beach and started covering the box and stamping.

I have a LOT of cool beach related items so choosing which to use was the hardest part! The shell trim has been waiting patiently for just the perfect project. It is too thick for a card and kind of big with the shells spaced too widely. But it looks amazing here dontcha think?

I used my new compressor and Copic markers to add colour to the coral and shell I had hanging around in my stash. They were both so boring before. That reminds me, have to turn it off and bleed the tank before I go to bed…

I used some very sheer gold ribbon to make a big bow using my bow easy. Then I distressed it using my heat tool. TIP: To get the bow to fluff up really well, instead of just wrapping the ribbon around and around the tool, pass it through the slit each time. You may need to scrunch your ribbon to make it all fit but that’s ok. If this means patterned, one-sided ribbon no longer shows the correct side up, just flip it in the middle! Works soooo much better than just wrapping it. The loops always separate correctly my way.

Dad Sailboat Card

I haven’t played in any challenges lately so I managed to wrap a few challenges into one card. Yeah!

It’s a pretty simple card. I used some of the papers from the Simon Says Stamp June Kit as many are quite masculine and a JustRite image I haven’t used before. It’s hard to see here but I airbrushed the sea and sky then added some accents to the waves including a shadow of the boat. I took the Copic Colour and Ink class in Toronto last weekend – loved it – so I got inspired to buy an air compressor. You’ll find many of my upcoming projects will certainly include airbrushing! Gotta make use of it or hubby will get grumpy. To be honest, I’ve rationed my air cans pretty severely so there are lots of times I would have used more had I had unlimited air so I can be much more creative with airbrushing now! Yeah!

PTI Blog Hop Pastel Smiles

Time for another PTI blop hop! This month the challenge was to pull out our favourite floral set and combine that with a colour palette featured on Nichole’s blog.

I’m afraid this isn’t my favourite floral set but my favourites don’t lend themselves to being stamped in multiple colours which is the second part of the challenge. I love larkspurs but it really works best in one colour and my other favourite is Sweet Life which could be stamped in multiple colours but I often find myself challenged to find three colours that work well to come up with one coordinated final blossom so trying to get them done in multiple colours seemed like too much work! It wasn’t until I started typing this that I thought about Life which would have been great, darn it! Oh well, this turned out really well even if it is CAS which isn’t my forte.

I personally don’t think of these colours as neutrals as referred to on Nichole’s blog, they are lovely pastels! I didn’t end up using the fine linen though. The layered die cut technique is from JJ Bolton’s blog, if I wasn’t typing this at 3;30 am I’d happily link it! She was featured at the CASE Study blog recently which is where I found the link so that might help you find it.

Chevrons and Roses Thank You Card

I love this card, no really, I LOVE this card. I hope you agree! I’m especially glad I love it because I know the couple I gave it to keep my cards out on display for months and even years! Sweet huh?

Hubby took this photo for me thus the different angle than I usually take pictures from. I volunteered to make this card for a group to sign but forgot to make it until the last minute so the second I finished it, I rushed upstairs to quickly shower so we could get going out. Everything else about it is fine though so it’s all good.

I CASEd a card by Nichole Heady for the metallic chevron base. Sorry but I don’t have a link handy. After that, my card differs a lot. I was inspired also by the  CAS-ual Fridays 97  challenge to use chevrons and flowers. This is a colour combo I’ve seen lately but have never used myself and really like. I credit Dawn McVey for making me brave enough to layer coral with red for the flowers! It always looks great when she does it.
