I Love You Watts

I was so inspired by last week’s Unscripted Sketches that I made two cards. This one was for hubby; he’s been behaving himself lately so I needed to let him know. ;)

It’s hard to see but I coloured the backside of the vellum bulb bright yellow in the center of the heart and lighter yellow just outside of it. I love colouring hte back of vellum; such an awesome look. I wish it showed up more. The hearts are coloured with a Copic and then I added Glossy Accents to the top.

Celebrate–You Deserve It!

I managed to do the March SFYTT! Third one in a row! I can’t believe I remembered! Hubby got a promotion in Feb and it took me this long to make him a card, shame on me.

I used Graphic 45 Le Cirque paper because it is so masculine. Hubby took one look at the card and said, “It’s very guy.” Yep, definitely not girlie. The sentiment panel is much more obvious and intense looking IRL. The EP is called Medieval Metals and is a mix of gold, silver and copper. You can’t see that it is metallic in the photo. Yeah, you can probably tell that the little words on the Kraft paper were not my original intention. I wasn’t sure if the EP would be OK for the tiny lettering. I decided it would be fine but I accidentally grabbed another colour of EP. Nuts! And it did NOT look good. But I think it looks OK in the end. I inked the DP the embossing is on so the embossing would show up more.

The star is cut from DP glued to thin chipboard. Then I glittered the edges with black glitter. I figured glitter was OK because circus costumes are so sparkly. And it is black. I cut the bottom panel with a large scalloped punch because I thought it looked  like a curtain held back with cords or rope.

Nautical Thanks

I was almost killed in a car accident last Friday. Some distracted moron drifted over the center line into my lane. Fortunately, I had a lane to my right so I swerved to avoid him and he continued drifting into that lane too! Took off my mirror! I was so worried I’d have to pay for it because he left the scene. But amazingly, another driver following behind the drifting moron followed him and so he finally returned! I was so grateful to the nice guy who followed and came back to be a witness that I made him this thank you card. I’m going to bake him something too.

It was hard to decide what type of card to make. I have car, travel, beach, robot, monster, office, nature, animal and a few other themed stamps appropriate for a guy. Other than knowing he is a teacher at my son’s school though, I have no idea what he likes. So I just went for this, I figured it was generic enough. I wish there was a guy equivalent to flowers for girls'; appropriate for anyone.

The knot tutorial came from Bar at Paper Pursuits, sorry I don’t have the link right now as it’s on my iPhone. It’s called a sailor’s knot so you can probably search her blog for it. I used the CPS sketch below. Click on it to link to the challenge.

Incidentally, the cops charged the guy who hit me and I didn’t have to pay the deductible because he was at fault. Whew! I was so scared and my 7 week old baby was with me. When the mirror was knocked off, it didn’t even make the van shake so we were OK. But I started shaking considering that if it weren't for my quick swerving, we could easily be dead. It is so strange and scary to see a huge SUV heading straight for you!

Taylored Expressions Blast from the Past Blog Hop-Worst Day at the Beach

Welcome to another TE blog hop! I hope you’ve enjoyed all the projects before mine! The theme this month was masculine cards. I have to admit, I used to be afraid of them but when you live in a house with 3 guys you have to get good at them pretty quickly!

The sentiment came out a bit light, in case you can’t read it, it says, “The worst day at the beach is better than the best day at work.” AMEN! So, how do you make a beach themed card without using any beach themed stamps? Well, you start by using the boxers from the Hangin’ Out set and stamp them on patterned paper to make swim trunks. Then you steal the worst day sentiment from the Crafty Expressions set. And since ‘at the beach’ isn’t an fill-in option, you use JustRite stamps! Cool huh?

CAS Masculine Tree Card for the OCC

I’d like to thank everyone who has congratulated me on my OCC design team acceptance. I’m glad you are excited too! I’m also getting close to 50,000 blog hits. While that may seem tiny compared to those who get millions of hits, I am proud because for so long the numbers were really tiny. BTW, the counter at the bottom of the page isn’t accurate because my old one was close to 30,000 hits the last time I looked, then it crashed. Might have  been much more but I’m going to go with 30,000. Hopefully this counter won’t crash!

This week’s challenge is to create a card or other project using Clean and Simple design principles and use a tree. CAS is far from my normal style but the whole reason I love challenges is for, wait for it… the Challenge of it. If it was too easy, it wouldn’t be as fun right?

Well, I’m not a huge collector of tree stamps, the only ones I have are very small, so I’m really glad I recently purchased some PTI stamps second-hand. Since the set I used was designed for manly cards, naturally I went with a masculine card. I used masking and sponging an top of my stamping to get a faux board look. I wanted to use something as nails but I just couldn’t think of what to use that wouldn’t overpower, look cheesily hand-drawn or look too large. Any thoughts for next time?

I super love this stamp. I can’t wait to create with it again!

Isn’t it just groovy! I am looking forward to doodling some flowers on this and trying to make it look tie dyed with Copics! But with the funky papers I chose, I figured a solid coloured car would be better! Besides, in my Google search, I could only find groovy vans, not Bugs. Unfortunately, from the angle I took the pictures at, you can’t see that there is a band of funky floral paper covering the middle third of the can anywhere the tag doesn’t cover. I have a guy friend who works at a quilting store repairing the machines and he is so used to girl talk and girlie things that I think he will be fine with the flowers on this. I am going to give him this, full of his favourite snacks, as a thank you (along with taking him and his wife out to dinner) after he helps us with out fence this summer.

This can uses a very fun and environmentally friendly technique. With a safety can opener , remove the BOTTOM of a pull top can. Use the contents and wash well. I don’t recommend using anything too stinky (I tried refilling a jar of chopped garlic once and the small permeated even after washing)! Then cover the can remembering that the opening is the bottom. After filling with your choice of a gift or treats (put the top of the treat bag at the bottom when filling) and glue the bottom back on. Voila! The pop top still works and pops open like brand new.

I was so excited to get this fabulous car stamp. Seriously, with a hubby and two boys, I NEED guy stamps!

My son doesn’t know this but I am saving this frame for him. He has been bugging his dad to build a soap box car (which apparently aren’t made from soap boxes anymore nor so they even resemble them) for ages so when they finally get their act together, I hope I get a great shot to put in here. I got a lot of input from Jameson and daddy for this one. Jameson helped me decide on the colour of the car and despite the fact that I chose ribbons, I got the OK from both of them!

The frame is from IKEA and is so easy to paint with acrylic paint. The lettering is Making Memories rub ons, however the D’s didn’t go on smoothly which is why they don’t look perfect. Ooops! The car is on white CS, them glued on to Craft-a-Board for stability.

Clear Dollar Stamps Sneak Preview – Gone Fishin’

What an awesome set for guys! Perfect for the outdoorsy type! We all know bows and flowers won’t work for the men in our lives.

Nothing too interesting to say that you can’t figure out from the picture. So this is part one of this gift set…

This is part two. I used the tool box template from My Time Made Easy to make this great gift box. Inside is an instant coffee jar repurposed with a covered lid with trail mix inside. I meant to add some other stuff but I didn’t get it done in time. And even though it doesn’t include the images from this stamp set..

Here is part three! A fishing tackle box with…

…a drawer inside! I was going to put gummy worms and candy bugs inside but hubby forgot to buy them on his trip to the store. Bummer! I figure between the tool box and the tackle box you could package so many things for the guys in your life. Both boxes are large enough for a tie (of course!) bath and body products, jewellery, snacks, baked goods or candy, fishing items (not that I know what they are called beyond weights or lures) and CDs or movies would fit in the tool box!

Calvin Card for Whimsical Wednesdays

I love those soft puppy dog eyes, don’t you? He also comes with Get Well written underneath and an ice bag on his head, so cute! It was lovely working with these digi images this month. It was also really fun to play with the sketch by Jack. I sure intend to keep this one around to use again.

I used Copics 100, 00, W 1, 5, 7 E 31, 33, 37, 53, 71, 77. The warm greys were used for the shadow, the E 70’s for the nose with a touch of 100-black; had I used all black, the detail would have disappeared. The blender was used for the nose highlight.

Farm Critter Stack Card

I have had this stamp for several years; isn’t it hilarious? I often use it with friendship sentiments, I mean, you have GOT to be a GOOD friend to be the guy on the bottom! This is also for Skipping Stones Designs Sketch Challenge. I haven’t found the money yet to buy any stamps YET but I hope to soon. They have a great sense of humour so I hope they appreciate this card!

I coloured this with Copics, no picture but I wrote down the colour numbers. E04, 31, 33, 35, 49 W1, 3, 5 YR4, 16, 21, 23, 38, R37, 59, 81, 83 Background BG10 B12 YG67 G21. I used the airbrush with a hand cut cloud template to do the sky. The grass tufts are hand drawn but I wasn’t stuck on the way the ones in the bottom right looked so I stuck the button over top. The twine is wavy because it is really a three strand jute cord pulled apart into its individual strands because it was too thick otherwise.

This was a really fun sketch. I’m not sure how much time there is to play because it was posted last Tuesday but I know I am going to keep it in my files to use again. OH and I forget to add, yes, I drew in the chicken footprints!

Honey Do Lists

That always cracks me up, Honey Do List! I made these notepads for my craft show.

I’m afraid there isn’t really anything interesting to say about these, they are pretty obvious. One thing I thought was cute, I used a + and a – screw. I know these screw head types have official names but to me they represent the positives and negatives of doing chores. You might hate doing them but you do feel mighty good when they are done!

I am so busy!

Man, there is so much to do to get ready for a craft show! I have been creating all weekend. I went to a warehouse sale on Friday night and got a Copic airbrush system! WOO HOO! I’ve wanted one for AGES! So now you are expecting to see an airbrushed card… sorry, I haven’t even used it yet. Too busy trying to make saleable items. I hate trying to make stuff that isn’t exactly my style when I’m not sure if it will sell but I KNOW that not everyone likes the girlie cards that are my forte. It’s not that I hate making it so much as I have no idea if anyone will like it! I hope someone will like this one.

Kinda cute and definitely masculine right? It is so fun digging through PTI buttons to get just the right one. I highly recommend them. I have almost every colour though I wish I had even more.

I tried using Skype for the first time tonight. You really have to try this if you have any friends or family far away. What fun. It was great to ‘meet’ Kathy, my buddy in AUSTRALIA!! It would cost a fortune without Skype. In case you have never heard of it, Skype is a free worldwide video phone service. All you need is a webcam, a computer and the ability to download the Skype program, oh and someone else with the same set up. Great fun!

Back in 5

This saying is too funny! I just had to use this on a card. I love this paper pack-Cosmo Cricket Boyfriend though I don’t really get the name. When I look at these papers I don’t think of a boyfriend. Maybe if I was 15 (when no teenager should be dating IMHO). Like I’d ever get that wish!!

I had fun covering this arrow in some of the paper. I remember using an answer key like this. Remember at the top, ‘Fill in the whole circle. Do not use a checkmark or an X. Use HB pencil.’ In fact, I think I used these in college for formal exams.

So what is your happy place? Mine, when I was in labour, was on the back of my favourite horse, on a trail ride, moseying along with sun light filtering through the trees. Oh, and since it is a happy place, there are no bugs!!! or spider webs across the trail!

Masculine Love Cards

It’s hard to make lovey dovey cards for guys right? I just got this great set from CTMH that made it so much easier. I’m making these for my craft sale so the attributes listed don’t reflect any particular person in my life but selected ones of course apply to my boys and hubby.

My instinct was to distress these so much more but I’ve read that a lot of people at craft fairs think distressing looks dirty rather than antique! Bummer!

I checked with hubby and he says these are guyish enough for even the manliest man.

My almost 9 y o son thinks this last one is the coolest. He likes the screw head brads and the corduroy ribbon. It is really soft and fuzzy, I am having fun working with it.

I am so sorry I haven’t posted lately. I am just now, three weeks later, getting better from a cold. I don’t think I’ve ever had a stupid cold that has lasted so darn long. I hope to make up for it in the next week or so. Thanks for hanging in with me.

I love vintage sheet music. Actually, now that I think about it, I think this was from a book, same difference! I love the old paper, so thin and easy to distress.

Snowman on Snowy Hills for CIC3

Even though most of the pieces in this Basic Grey chipboard pack were Christmasy, I just loved the snowman and two huge, intricate snowflakes so I bought it anyway. It was fun thinking up details to accent this card. This card is for Clear Dollar Stamps Challenge CIC3, Winter Theme.

Isn’t he cute? The background is not quite navy, dry embossed with a Cuttlebug folder then heat embossed. I used white pearls over white pigment ink gently wiped across the raised areas and it looks very snowy and wet IRL. The hills are made from three layers of cotton quilt batting. Much more stable than the poly fill used for most quilts and comforters, this fill is used for true, old-fashioned quilts. I sewed it to the embossed layer with tan thread to go with my antiquey, vintagey look. The hills are distressed with Antique Linen. The snow man himself was painted with Crackle paint, distressed and the top half lifted up with foam dots.

I used an idea from one of Tim Holtz’ 12 Days tags to make a scarf using wire sandwiched between two layers of ribbon. The mitts are felt, also distressed for a darker red look. The hat is plain cardstock; I tried colouring the felt with Copics for a black hat, HORRIBLE!! It just doesn’t soak into the lower layers well so it just looked like really dirty red felt! However, the Copic worked well for colouring the buttons. What I thought were tons of black buttons were actually dark grey! The twig arms were painted in with acrylic paint, the eyes are brads with the backs cut off and I used a scrap of torn cardstock antiqued with Linen for the carrot nose. Finally I added the liquid pearl ‘snow’, the layered snowflakes in the corners and the banner.

A Couple More!!

Gift card holders are so small and fun, I just can’t stop making them! I now have to package them, send them to work with hubby and add them to my Etsy shop.

#1-Cogsmo Origami Style Gift Card Holder

Isn’t this paper cute? I figure this Cogsmo paper would be great for tech related gift cards or for boys even though it isn’t festive or wintery. Sorry the ribbon looks goofy, this silver ribbon from SU! is actually a grosgrain type ribbon and it stiff like crazy. It was all I could do to get it to sit straight. Never mind making the bow look nice in the photo!

#2-Cogsmo Envelope Style Gift Card Holder

I made this using the remnants from the gift card holder above. Since it uses 8x8” paper, you have to trim your 12x12” paper down. That leaves more than enough to make another envelope style gift card holder. I wish I had cut more carefully so the main image wasn’t upside down. **SIGH***

Quick Double Challenge Post – Chicken Car

Thought I’d throw this post up quick so I can link it to a challenge site. The first challenge is Flourishes colour challenge, use dark red, olive green, chocolate and cream. Edited to add: Finally I have time to get to finishing this post! I hope you like my colouring on the chicken car! I worked for over an hour on it. Unfortunately, my haste in posting this card means I forgot to add some highlights with a white gel pen. Ooops, I’ll have to add that later. The olive paper I had looked too bright so I sponged it and used SU! rough wheel on it to subdue it. The ribbon through the hardware buckle is actually the BACK of May Arts corduroy ribbon. Thanks to Sandra for this fabulous image!! I loved hers so much I shamelessly BEGGED for a couple images! She stamped it on white but because the challenge called for cream, chocolate, dark red and (optional) olive, I very lightly sponged Antique Linen Distress ink over the white to darken it slightly.

Cream Coloured Ponies and Crisp Apple Strudels

OK, so there is no strudel image on this card but it worked as a fun title! This is another entry for My Favourite Things challenge on the Flourishes blog. Be inspired by the song, ‘My Favourite Things’ from the Sound of Music. My first thought was ‘girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes’, this was my second. (I typed up that post already intending to post it first but my picture sucked so I am going to have to re-take it.) I don’t see any ‘one entry only’ rule so I am entering two! I had a brand new horse stamp that has been waiting to be used. This is also for the latest SCS Sketch Challenge SC253 and for Clear Dollar Stamps “Give me 5” challenge to use 5 of something on your card. Mine uses 5 colours, dark brown, medium brown, light yellow, blue and ivory; the 5 brads at the bottom also qualify! I was worried that 5 colours might be too easy, especially since they were already in the DP!

Here is a TIP for you. The ribbon I used looks like it is 2” wide right? It is actually two strips 1” wide each but you can’t tell because the middle is covered. Instead of the triangles, another ribbon layered over the middle also works well. I have to tell you, it is really hard to colour a cream-coloured pony! I think he still looks creamy. What do you think??

Cowboy Howdy for Whimsical Wednesdays!

I couldn’t decide what to do for this week’s challenge. I was sitting there stuck, Jameson decided to help me out. “Why don’t you use the Cowboy set mom?” Sure kiddo, good idea! I’d been making kid and baby cards all afternoon so continuing the theme seemed to work! Smart kid! Thanks Jameson.

I paper pieced this little Sherriff using cardstock and patterned paper. Oh, except the holster, it is pieced with faux suede ribbon! Fun huh? His face is coloured with Copics and the whole panel is flyspecked using a SU! colour spritzer. The stars were cut from a Sizzix die and I used DP rather than cardstock. so when I came up with the button holes idea, I was worried that when I tied the twine, it might cut through the paper. So I reinforced the back with chipboard, just between the holes.
