Shaped Cards for Crazy 4 Challenges

For my second week hosting over at Crazy 4 Challenges, I decided we should make shaped cards. Anything other than a plain circle, rectangle or square. I had lots of ideas but then I realized I’d already made this card that I loved!

c4c 18 scalloped card shape challenge

When I made it, I was experimenting with some new supplies. The Rebecca Lace background from Simon Says Stamp and some gorgeous new Daniel Smith paints. If you like to watercolour, you MUST get yourself some professional paints, just a few at a time, when they are on sale. Preferably Daniel Smith ones. They truly are amazing! I also finally got myself a few Silver Brush watercolour brushes. They are soooo much better than the ones I’d been using. I had a variety of brushes from value lines from Curry’s to expensive ones from Michaels (coupon baby!) and even some from the dollar store. I’ve always wondered how someone could paint something then come back to the first part and add pigment when in my world, that paint would already be dry! Well, it’s because Silver Brushes hold an enormous amount of water! Oh, now I get it! That’s how their paint is still wet! Such a revelation!

The colours I used here were Amythyst Genuine, yes, the actual gemstone is used to make the paint, Duochrome Oceanic which is an aqua with gold shimmer in it, Rhodonite Genuine, Bronzite Genuine, Prussian Green and Cobalt Teal Blue. Most of these are shimmery which looks so amazing with the platinum embossing powder I used to emboss the lace image. I used multiple layers of the same powder to colour my Thinking of You die cut. The stamp is actually square but I decided I preferred it trimmed into a scalloped circle.

I hope you have some awesome ideas for shaped cards. If you join us over at the C4C blog, don’t forget to come back here and leave me a comment so you are entered in my giveaway!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Watercolour Butterflies

pti blog hop logo

Today I am playing in the PTI blog hop! I just loved the inspiration photo they picked this month!

wtcl butterflies

Here is my take on the photo. I decided to use butterflies; I had thought about using ice cream cones but the die is too large to use in this pattern on a card. In the future it might make a nice canvas though! I used my professional watercolours from various companies and some Arches watercolour paper. I’d normally save such nice paper for larger paintings but I flubbed the other side so at least it got used right? The white panel was splattered with some grey watercolour and I added a vellum strip with a white embossed sentiment across the panel. The card base is made from aqua mist cardstock! Last but not least, I added a few sequins from Pretty Pink Posh.

Freesia Sympathy Card for The Shabby Tea Room

Once again I used the colour combo from this week’s The Shabby Tea Room sketch. There’s ivory, white, black and the little tidbits of purple on top of the hat.

freesia purple sympathy

I recently bought this freesia stamp set and coloured it with the no-line colouring technique. I used a very light green Memento ink so it wouldn’t show once I finished. Then I watercoloured it with my Kuretake watercolour set. Those colours are amazing! I also have the Derwent Inktense Pencils and honestly, I am not a huge fan of them. Save your money for the Kuretake!

Our sponsor this week is Paper Sweeties! The owner is also the owner of The Shabby Tea Room so I’m sure she would love it if you checked out her little store. She has great stamps, dies and embellies. I got the sweet little flower sequins and the seam binding from Paper Sweeties.  So head on over to the challenge blog or the store to see what is on offer!

I’m also entering this in the Winnie & Walter watercolour challenge.

Enjoy, Rebecca

This one is for the Winnie and Walter watercolour challenge. I had fun using my new Kuretake watercolours and the latest Simon Says Stamp card kit. The colours are more vibrant IRL, I don’t know what is with some cards and how they photograph!

I hope you had fun working on your WCMD projects!

Life Gift Set

I have been so busy making crafts for the craft show I am going to I keep forgetting to blog! I made this set last week sometime with my new Papertrey Life stamp set.

I made matching envelopes for all of the cards like the one shown in the last picture. Then I made a case for the cards. I stamped the same image with Versamark, then added heat n stick powder and three colours of glitter.

I think I need to jazz this up a wee bit more. I’m just not sure what else to put on it. Anyone have any ideas? The template is one also from PTI, I think it might be one of the free ones.

I AM NOT READY FOR FALL!! Adirondack Beach Card

Don’t forget to enter my draw for BLOG CANDY! Click HERE for details!

I apologize for shouting but I hate winter. I never liked it but with lupus, winter is not just a pain but painful. All I see lately are fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed cards! Even though I don’t celebrate the latter three, I am not ready for even fall cards! Fall isn’t really that bad but it means winter is coming; here in Southern Ontario, we get about 4 weeks of fall before it gets yucky and cold (like our whole month of July!! GRRRR) So I decided to go with a late summer beach card! I would still go to the beach on a nice day, just not in the water! I will defy the calendar as long as I can!!

adiron beach 01

This card is a CASE of one by Julie Koerber. I used her layout mostly and she also used twine, a shell charm and an Adirondack chair image. Sorry, I can’t link you because I don’t know her blog and can’t remember which website I saved it off of. The image was coloured with SU! markers; the ‘sand’ was sponged with Distress inks and stamped with a sand image that went with the chair. I continued the sponging up the sides and across the top of the image panel. The other panels are all either sponged or DTP inked. In case it matters to you, this is an oversized card at 5x6”. The beach chair and grass are cut out and mounted on foam dots.

I am trying to add a touch more bling/shimmer/glitter to my cards so although you can’t see it, the sand has Perfect Pearls swept over it. The cloud was shimmeringly coloured in also; I scribbled with a SU! marker in bordering blue on a CD (as a palette), I added a tiny drop of liquid pearls and a spritz of water from a Mini Mister, mixed and painted the cloud. The ink I used for the sentiment blurred a bit in the water but oh well!! This card also, barely, qualifies for Sharon Johnson’s No Time to Stamp Challenge #103, ssnotime103 to Overstamp your Sentiment (on your image). Feel free to click to enlarge the photo to read the sentiment.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Joy Fold Seaside Card

This was a really fun card to make. It really is one normal-sized card with one side shortened and one mini card put together seaside joy fold1 overlapping each other. The little crab keeps the mini card  closed. So cute! I chose this card so I could use Card Directions again! Such a cute little set and at $1.99 how can you pass it up?

I used Shore Treasures to make the main part of the card. I LOVE this set!! The style of the illustrations are so perfect for  seaside joy fold closeup watercolouring! Kinda wispy and flowing. Yeah, I know my watercolouring is far from perfect but I have such fun doing it and I wasn’t going for perfect. I think I should have stamped my waves at the edge of   seaside joy fold open1 the sky and the water and a line of sand at the edge the sand and the water. Oh well. Unfortunately, the colours are cdsseaside joy fold open2 somewhat washed out, even with no flash. ***SIGH*** You also can’t see the PearlEx I used for the shell and the sand.

I took photos of the stages involved in opening this card above. Plus a close up of the watercolouring. I was actually quite pleased with the crab. I think he really looks like the sun is hitting his right side. I’m not sure I have ever seen a real crab so forgive me if the colours are wrong!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Sympathy Card for Hubby

I know, I don’t have to make a card to show my hubby that I am sorry his grandmother died and that I care. After all, I passed up going to the Creating Keepsakes Convention in Buffalo three Saturdays ago to go with him to see her in the hospital. It was the last time we saw her awake and happy so I’m very glad I went. I didn’t make a card for almost two weeks because he was too stressed to watch our very sweet but patience-trying baby for tim beach sympathy
very long (I am not a quick card maker). I supported him in every way I  could. But after all, I am a card maker and if I don’t make cards for the most important people in my life, what is the point of making cards at all???

Oh, and this rubber was new!! LOL Hee Hee! (OK, enough, this is supposed to be a very serious post about a sympathy card. Smile wiped off face…) This set is called Coastal Wished by Our Craft Lounge. I bought it specifically because I have been having trouble making guy cards for guys I don’t know well. Sure if you know what they like you can make a card that suits them but to me the beach for guys seems to be the equivalent of flowers for women. Works for everyone. I can’t think of a single woman I wouldn’t send a floral card to; I can’t think of a single guy I wouldn’t send a beach card to. Perfect! It just seems harder to get universal images for guys. If you have any other themes that fit the bill, please leave me a comment or email me to let me know!! And don’t say ties or soap-on-a-rope!! (Ooops, having fun again, back to serious!!)

This card couldn’t possibly be simpler so I have very few comments on it. First, this is two stamps, just so you know. I lined up the horizon line on my second image with the grid line on my block so I would know where to stamp so they would connect, these being rubber, not clear polymer. Second, I love watercolouring and I used watercolour paper because the washes warp normal paper. Third, this card is an unusual size. 6x3 3/4” I think. Last, I used markers to enhance the tree and tufts of grass, so much easier than trying to use a fine brush and watercolour paint. Mixed Media YEAH!!

Enjoy, Rebecca
