Candle Gift Set

A couple in my church has been married for 66 years! Can you believe that? I can’t even imagine! WOW! I bought them 3 candles from Bath and Body works (on sale for $5! YEAH!) to give to them at their anniversary party and wanted to create some nifty packaging.

candle gift set

I stacked the candles with foam in between them cut with a scalloped circle die. Just so it didn’t look tacky but at the same time, the lids wouldn’t get scratched from the candle above it. Then I wrapped the cardstock around the candle stack just to judge how much overlap would be needed. I scored about 3/4” from the bottom of the paper and clipped it like in the photo below.

v clipped curves image

This allows you to fold the tabs in and glue them to the scalloped circle bottom. Then I created a lid using the same technique.

candle gift set card

I used the latest WMS sketch for the card. Click to visit the challenge.

WMSC97

The ribbon I used is self-ruffling meant for wedding favours. I used it for the card and for under the flowers. They are just hydrangeas I pulled off a stem from Michaels and glued to the card. I added pearl centers to make it prettier.

OCC Weaving Challenge-Floral Vine Card

This week our OCC challenge was to use weaving on your card. I decided to use an uneven type of weaving, threading Memory Thread by DMC through a trellis to resemble a vine.

weaving vine card

Memory Thread is like very thin cording with wire inside so it holds it’s shape pretty well. I used a hydrangea punch, embossing the petals individually in a circular pattern to give them dimension. The larger ones are embossed downwards and the small ones are embossed upwards in a cup shape. I think I will add more flowers later and when I decide to use this card, I will add a tiny tag tied onto the trellis with a little sentiment.

I hope you will play along this week. Be sure to visit the OCC blog to see the other AWESOME samples the Design Team have created!

Clear Dollar Stamps Sneak Peak – Air Flair

What a fun set! I really enjoyed working with this it – OK, I know I’ve said that about all of them but I really love Clear Dollar Stamps!

AirFlairRE1

This is a card organizer file, made from a Timeless Template from PTI. I used the dandelion image on the base CS in watermark ink. The main body is stamped directly on the DP so the legs would show up without having to cut out those skinny lines! I stamped and cut the wings out, glittered them and adhered the wings to the stamped body. Then I stamped another body on CS and popped it up on dimensionals. The wings are glittered and the body was painted with Lumiere, a pearlescent paint.

This set will be available May 1st. The link on Lori’s blog, Clearly iStamp will be active then. Be sure to visit the rest of the DT who are previewing sets today.

Clear Dollar Stamps Sneak Preview-Tag Blessings 1

I’m back with more samples for a fabulous new set, Tag Blessings. There are so many uses for this set! I loved working with it!!

TagBlessingsRE1
I used a tutorial from SCS to create this box card. Inside is a combination of two stamps from the set. I liked the bottom of the one circle image and the top of another so I merged them! I carefully cut out the inner circle of the green stamped image and also trimmed the bird image to match. It is hard to see but I cut carefully around the leaves so a few stick over the edge of the green circle.

The bow is lovely silk ribbon, I adore tying bows out of silk, so soft and the middle is small with poofy loops. The butterfly has pearls for the body from my local dollar store, AWESOME! I use so many more now that they are so cheap. Only 2 c each!!

This set will be available June 1st. The link on Lori’s blog, Clearly iStamp will be active then. Be sure to visit the rest of the DT who are previewing sets today.

Another Get Well Skipping Stones Sketch Card

This card is very similar to the card I posted last but much simpler. The recipient is mostly blind and will be looking at this with a magnifying glass so I kept it very simple and his wife will have to enjoy the detailed colouring.

Get Well – Skipping Stones Sketch

I needed a couple of get well cards lately and I was kinda stumped even though I got tons of new goodies from Ellen Hutson lately! So, as I always do when I am stuck, I tried out a new sketch.

peach guava fell better
I decided to try out my new Nook and Pantry paper. But, as usual with Basic Grey, the colours didn’t match any of my SU! CS. So I checked out my old In Colours and Groovy Guava matched along with blush. Yippee!

I wanted a white lab coat but an ivory background so I coloured the nurse on white paper and cut her out. There were so many little bits that stuck out like her arms and stethoscope that I only cut out her body and ponytail, stamping her on the ivory paper for the small bits. Then I glued the cut out pieces over top.

Anatomy of a Pear

I have always LOVED this stamp. Funny, I am not stuck on eating pears IRL but I LOVE artistic pears and have several stamps. This one hovers between a botanical drawing and a science lesson-so cool!

anatomy of a pear earthlove

I coloured this ages ago so I am sorry, I have no idea of the Copics I used but I was delighted to see that they match Earth Love DP perfectly!  And even better, the yellow matches SU! banana CS perfectly! I always have such a hard time matching CS to Cosmo Cricket papers since I mostly keep SU! CS on hand. Wasabi, an old In Colour matches well too. The brown strip above the ribbon is a strip of CS, I think it looks rather striking.

Pink Dandelion Thoughts of You Card

This was a very fun card to make. I saw someone in blogland, I think it was Nichole Heady, make a card with the focal point embossed in white with ink swirled around the image. I just had to try it though I used a coloured ink instead of the white craft ink she used.

pink dandelion thinking of you
Isn’t it soft and pretty? This card is for a woman on a message board who has cancer. I haven’t been active on that board in over three years but I still get some notices sent to me directly and this request was one of them. I hope she likes it. Apparently, this lady is the first to send cards to others in need so I felt this was a great cause. It is also for CPS 158.

Earth Love Road Less Traveled for Whimsical Wednesdays

I got so many new goodies today! Woo Hoo! Earth Love paper pack was one of my latest acquisitions and it was perfect for a card for Whimsical Wednesdays.

eath love road
I got the card finished except for the sentiment and had to think hard to find a phrase that was not only something different but was in a fun, whimsical font just right for this paper. I think this one is perfect. The card base is kraft run though my Cuttlebug embossing folder. Then I went over the dots with white snow ink from Papertrey Ink. It looked too perfect (but can’t wait until I want want perfect white dots!) so I ran some cocoa ink around the edge only.

The green twill around the card is a fake out. I put a foam dot right in the middle of the panel where the ribbon would thread through so I slipped a tab of ribbon under the left side and I just put two pieces of angle cut ribbon together, slightly staggered, tied with twine and stuck the edges under the panel. I actually really like how it turned out. It uses way less ribbon and there are no ugly ends on the inside of the card either.

Thanks to Jack for this great sketch. I loved the three circles at the bottom! Thanks Jack. I hope you all played last week because DDSC18the prize from Katie at Paper, Makeup, Stamps will be revealed! I can’t wait to see what it is! Come on  now, Christmas is over, it is time to PLAY! Try out this week’s sketch, it is really fun and different! Think of those circles as letters, buttons, flowers, punched circles of patterned paper! The strip under the main panel can be ribbon, lace or cardstock or DP but you could also substitute some kind of shape or embellishment because they aren’t very long! You know you waaaanna! Upload to your blog or a gallery with DDSC18 and don’t forget to visit Mr Linky at Whimsical Wednesdays with the DIRECT link to your project. HAVE FUN!! When taking a look at the DareDevils blogs, please excuse Cassie, Darla and Heather this week.

Webster’s Pages Mojo Monday Card

I love Mojo Monday! You have to enter to try and win a FREE stamp set worth $24 too! Not too shabby of a prize! I won once before with this card and I didn’t enter again for a while because I wasn’t sure if I was allowed even though I couldn’t find a rule. Some contests do not allow winners to win again for three months. No point in entering if you can’t win right? So here goes with Mojo Monday #98.

(Can you tell I want to try staging more interestingly?) The DP base and the scalloped edge are both Webster’s Pages journaling cards. I just LOVE these! They are decorated on one side and the websters post cardother side is lined and decorated. The scalloped edge was printed only, I cut it out from a larger card (not pre-cut). On the right side, the stamp, Post Card wording, stripes and the flourish-y were part of the journaling card-YEAH!!

The sentiment at the bottom was on the back of the scalloped journaling card. These cards are just so beautiful, anyone could make a gorgeous card with them. The heart frame used to be websters post card closeup silver, it is a Memory Makers tag maker frame; I coloured it with my Pilot gold paint pen. Both the photo corners and the frame were too bright for the rest of the card so I darkened them with a dark brown Copic so they fit better with the rest of the card.

The ribbon bow is made with the 2” Bow Easy, two-three looped silk ribbon bows layered on each other with a SU! pretties kit pearl on top. All of the layers are sponged with cocoa ink. The ink bottle and pen nib were stamped on Kraft CS, cut out and coloured with markers, cocoa for the bottle and Copic c-1 for the nib; both had clear Spica pen over them. For the bottle I hoped it might look more like glass without having to get out the glaze and for the nib, more metallic. The music is a real vintage music sheet and I used those old-fashioned, lick-to-stick (yucky tasting) photo corners.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Rose Romance Card

Not much to say on this one. I sewed the lace in place to get the imperfect gathers. I used my bow easy to make the bow and I purposely left it as a ‘shabby chic’ bow (tails on opposite sides of the loops). The swirly die cuts are from a new Sizzlits die, I was  removed for DT appl very surprised to see the same one in the SU! catty because I thought they were exclusive dies! I cut them from moss CS and sponged them with old olive using Cut n Dry foam, my new favourite tool! Watch Jennifer McGuire videos and you will see what I mean! The rose is coloured with R20, 32, 59 and a bit of 00.

Bow Easy and Tutorial Plus Bow Tying Tips

I bought a Bow Easy from Sharon Johnson of No Time To Stamp. She has great photos on her site but I thought I’d add a bit more adding how to include extra tails and an extra ribbon to tie around a panel or jar etc. I also took my photos very close up so hopefully it can help some of you out there. Now I already tie a pretty nice bow so I was skeptical of how much I would end up using this little gadget but for $6, why not! I actually really love it. I find myself wasting less ribbon because I know exactly how much I need after making the same bows over and over.

When you are new to this, choose a long piece of ribbon so you don’t have to worry about it being long enough. A short ribbon is very hard to work with. Start with a piece you don’t care much about to practice and try different sizes out. You might also want to check your Bow Easy for little sharp pokey things on the edges, I just used a nail file to remove them before I went any further. I think they were just leftover from the manufacture, the edges weren’t cut perfectly smooth. If you don’t, they will catch on thinner ribbons, snagging them and make thicker ribbons harder to remove!

Bow Easy Tying

Step 1. Starting at the left side of the Bow Easy template, lay your ribbon over the plastic.be1

Step 2. Wrap your ribbon under the template and back across to the right side. The tail is under my right thumb.
be2

Step 3. Thread the tail into the groove in the plastic above the ribbon you have already laid across. If you are using wider ribbon, you may need to scrunch the ribbon lower on the template  to make it work.be3
Step 4. Bring the ribbon tail  from the back, up in the groove on the lower edge of the template. Do not pull the ribbon tight, YET! This will create a loop. (Keep in mind that the ribbon you just looped around the back is the center of the bow front so you might want to check and make sure that your ribbon is right way up if it is one-sided!)
be4
Step 5. Cross your ribbon tail over the loop.
be5
Step 6. THIS IS WHAT NOT TO DO!!! A big mistake and one I’ve made often! This bow will not tighten and stay tied.be6
Step 7. This is the RIGHT WAY!! Tuck your tail into the loop and out to the right. (not out the bottom)
be7

Step 8. Now all you have to do is tighten it!
be8
Step 9. Remove it from the Bow Easy. If you like a ‘shabby chic’ bow, stop here!
be9

Step 10. Fiddle with the tails so they are both on one side of the loops.
be10

General TIPS I think bows look classic (my favourite look) when the loops are 1-1.5 times as long as the ribbon is wide and the tails are 1.5-2.5 times as long as the ribbon is wide. Of course you can do what you like but this is a great guideline to start with if you aren’t sure how you want your bow. One the Bow Easy, I use the 1 1/4 width for 3/8” ribbon and 1 3/8” for 1/2” ribbon. I haven’t got a ‘rule’ for ribbon sizes beyond that yet.

Part 2! Adding extra ribbon to your bow.

If you read my blog much, you will know I don’t like the look of a bow glued right on to a ribbon unless the ribbon is puckered making it look like you really tied two different ribbons across the panel. So I tried adding a ribbon at different places in the tying sequence, here are the results.

Extra Bow Tails

Please perfect your bow tying before you try this! It is easy to get confused. I recommend you practice with different coloured ribbons!

Step 1. To get extra bow tails, lay another ribbon (or as many as you’d like) across the first ribbon wrapped around the template. I will have to shimmy  my ribbon down before I can tie it! Place the ribbon face down if it is one-sided.bee1
Step 2. Tie as normal. Try your best to ignore the extra ribbon.bee2

Step 3. This is what the bow looks like when removed. Just like a normal bow, you may have to fiddle with the tails.
bee3

Extra Ribbon for Tying Across a Panel Etc.

bee8

Step 1. Tie ribbon up to the point where you are ready to tuck the tail into the loop.bee4

Step 2. Lay a ribbon across the template. Because I was taking  photos holding the template in front of my camera, the ribbon slipped down. This actually makes it easier to tie! You can see I am holding the ribbon tail at the back so it doesn’t slip out of the slot. If your ribbon is one-sided, place it face down during the tying.bee5

Step 3. Tie as usual. bee6

Step 4. This is what it looks like in the end. Now you can tie these around a jar or basket handle. Or glue the ends around the back of a panel like in my example above. Don’t worry about exactly where on the ribbon you tie the bow, you can slide it along later. however, if your ribbon is very  delicate, you might want to leave extra at both ends to help you with placement. You could even use embroidery floss, fishing line or twine instead of the second ribbon if you want to tie the bow around a 3-D object and not have much showing. You could also bead the ribbon etc. for a really cool look.bee7

Enjoy, Rebecca

June Rose for Clear Dollar Stamps

Finally, I got time to make more cards! I was busy all week preparing to have 50 guests over for a potluck BBQ plus I was sick because I tried changing medications and the new dose was too low. On top of all of that, hubby is on STRIKE! This has been one H*** of a month! Fortunately, as a paramedic, he is an essential service so is only down to 75% of shifts rather than none but that is still 75% pay. Hard to deal with when we only have one income! **SIGH** Tonight, I got to sit down long enough to make THREE cards, look for the other two soon.

cdsjune rose

I coloured this image, June Rose from Clear Dollar Stamps,  so long ago I can hardly remember doing it. Probably three weeks ago now! Isn’t it gorgeous!! It is hard to see but I made my own Glimmer Mist for the music background. It was already aged to start with. Of course, as with all things shimmery, it looks much better IRL! For this very pale colour I used 1/2 of a mini mister of water, one drop cameo coral reinker, same of pretty in pink and enough Aztec Gold Pearl Ex (or Perfect Pearls) that would cover a dime about 1/16” deep! I mean seriously, how do you measure an amount so small, maybe 1/16th of a teaspoon? My measuring spoons only go to a 1/4 teaspoon! If I were to do it again, I would use maybe 2 drops of coral and 3 of pink to get a deeper colour.

The image is coloured with Copics; I really tried hard to leave more highlights this time. I find that the hardest thing for me. The june rose copics ribbon is coloured with R32,a peachy rose colour that I also used to outline the rose panel and for the roses themselves. Other Copic colours in the photo. The panel behind the rose is kraft CS heavily sprayed with a dark brown Glimmer Mist, I forget the colour name. It is again, really pretty IRL! I wish I could photograph it so you could see it!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Pink Peony for Clear Dollar Stamps

This is one of 4 sympathy cards I made for family members recently. This one is for hubby Tim’s mom, it was her mom who died. Doesn’t this beautiful flower work so well for this? I enjoyed making it though I wasn’t stuck on my watercolour technique on this one. I find it hard to make very pale colours look right. Oh well. I wasn’t sure what to do for a sentiment but after thinking cdspink moss peony about it, the included sentiment worked for this particular occasion because grandma was an avid gardener. I decided to put it inside the card after all, rather than on the front but it reads, “When a flower blooms, so does hope.” Lady Bird Johnson. The button used to be vanilla from SU! but I coloured it pink with a Copic, R21 I think. I traced around the flower using the outer edge of the second largest Labels 4 Nestabilities die. Clearly it isn’t perfect but I like the result and will do it again. I wish Spellbinders would make another set or the Labels dies and Mega Rectangles including intermediate sizes like they do with rectangles, circles etc

I used my bow easy to create this cute little bow AND I threaded in the ribbon that goes across the card while making it. I don’t like just plunking a bow on top of the ribbon across the card. Because it isn’t puckered, it gives away that you ‘cheated’! Yeah, I know it isn’t really cheating, if it looks good there is no cheating, but I really like the ribbon underneath to be puckered so I throw in a second ribbon before tying; it is really easy. I hope to do a photo tutorial on it soon as well as some other bow tying and Bow Easy tips. If you are interested in a Bow Easy, visit Sharon Johnson’s blog and click on her Tools page way up high by her blog header. Super cheap and easy to use.

No Small Miracle for Twinkling Tuesday

Yeah! I got the stamps I won from Verve for THIS card I entered for Mojo Monday! I love the sentiments in the stamp set I chose. I can’t wait to use some more of them. It wasn’t until I sat down to type this that I realized I probably had a subconscious reason for using this sentiment. Last night I watched the first few minutes of an Oprah show I had PVR’d. The topic was Madelyn McCann, the little British girl who was kidnapped in Portugal 2 years ago while on vacation. I went to bed after and hugged my no small miracle
baby’s little body so tight and stroked  his soft skin. He is a difficult baby sleep wise (loves to stay up into the wee hours of the morning) but I have always said I will never regret the parenting style I have chosen. Sure my baby hates being alone and that can get very annoying at times. But I LOVE sleeping with him and if I died tomorrow (heaven forbid), I would never regret one minute I spent cuddling him, letting him nap on me (while getting nothing done of course) or allowing him to sleep in our bed! He truly is our small miracle or as the song from Charlotte's Web says, “Just another ordinary miracle today!”

This card features ribbon from Sharon Johnson’s Stamp Simply store. She is featuring cards made by others with her ribbon so I am happy to oblige. This ribbon is so wide it can be used as a layer! You have got to get some; she is also now selling a cheap clip_image002little tool to help you tie perfect bows plus other fun stuff! Her store links are just above her blog header.

Another fun sketch from little Madelynn for Twinkling Tuesdays. She sure comes up with some interesting sketches. I really loved this one. Not much to tell, all pretty obvious. Oh, there was one fun thing. I didn’t cut into a single full-sized sheet of paper for this card! All scraps! WOOO HOOO! I hope you will play along! Upload using MTTSC21 to SCS or PCP or your blog an link to the Twinkling Tuesday blog. I hope you will visit all the other Twinklettes (links on sidebar) and be sure to leave them some LOVE! Oh, and don’t forget to give your own miracles a hug!

Enjoy, Rebecca
