Flower Soft Quadruple Challenge Card

This card was the second project I made for SOA (Stampin’ Out Alzheimer’s). It covered four challenges, almost! I kinda goofed on one challenge. I used the Taylored Expressions sketch and the  i {heart} papers challenge to use Flower Soft as well as the PTI challenge to use three buttons. I messed up a wee bit for the Taylored Expressions Two by Two Challenge. Use pink and brown soa flower soft(two colours) and 2 embellishments. If you consider the flower soft an embellishment as well as the buttons and ribbon, that makes three. OOOPS!! If I am chosen, I hope they don’t notice! I just checked ( Monday, 1am) and they haven’t  chosen all the winners yet. Here’s hoping! I really rushed so there are a very few spots where the Flower Soft didn’t stick, I’ll have to fix them later, oh, and the few strays! I used glue that dries to repositionable so it shouldn't be too hard to add a wee bit more. One thing I would change if it hadn’t been 11:47 (deadline 12:00!) when I started to photograph and upload it!… I would have used a colour other than dark brown for the scalloped circle under the ‘thank you'; I probably would have used another style of font/stamp too. I grabbed both the white circle and the brown scalloped one from my cut-it-but-didn’t-use-it’ bag and the stamp was sitting around on my table because I hadn’t put it away yet and it was the right size!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Just Be Yourself for Twinkling Tuesday

It was my little guy, Jameson’s turn to be the Temporary Twinkie this week!! We chose an awesome book this time as an Inspiration  Challenge. In fact, we chose it all the way back at the time of our last challenge. We had to decide which to do and this one we saved for next time, this time!! He loves this book and asks me to mttsc25 suki1read it all the time. I am including lots of photos of the book so you can see all the wonderful illustrations the Twinkle Team had to work with. In case you are new to my blog, the Twinkle Team was started by Jessica of the Whimsical Butterfly because her  daughter, Madelynn, was mttsc25 suki2interested in creating card sketches. She was so eager, her mom built a design team around them. Other team member’s children wanted to play too so the Temporary Twinkie position was created. Each week, the team is inspired by a sketch, colour challenge or inspiration challenge from a kiddo. This is the second time for Jameson. Check out our last inspiration challenge HERE.

Please click on the photos for closer viewing. They should be good enough quality to read the text and appreciate the watercolouring. Here is a synopsis of the book Suki’s Kimono.

suki1a

Suki is a young Japanese-Canadian girl who loves learning about her heritage from her grandmother. Her grandmother gave her a kimono and her first time wearing it was to a summer street festival where they ate traditional food, listened to music and performed a graceful circle dance with other dancers. When school starts in the fall, Suki insists on wearing her favourite thing the first day, her kimono and Japanese wooden clogs called geta, despite her sisters who say suki1she will look weird, insist she needs something cool to wear and walk ahead of her all the way to school. The other children make fun of her too, calling her clothes funny and saying her beautiful, full sleeves make her look like a bat! When the first-grade teacher asks the children to introduce themselves and explain what they did that summer, not only does Suki tell the suki2 other kids about her kimono, geta and the festival, she even shows them the dance. The kids start out teasing her but as they watch her dance, they become quiet and even clap after she is done.

I decided to go with the obvious Asian theme in this book because I don’t use this gorgeous stamp often but I love it so much. I also suki3 wanted too try this tutorial for a no-wrinkle distress background. I LOVE the result! I used SU! night of navy, vintage violet, buckaroo blue and eggplant inkpads. I smooshed them on my brand new No Stick craft sheet and spritzed with water. Then simply press your paper into the wet sheet. Dry with your heat gun and repeat until you have the look you want.  TIP: Be sure to twist the pads to create circles or you will have straight lines on your paper initially. Then I sprayed the background with gold Luminarte Shimmer Mist. Wow, so pretty! I suki4 might try this on glossy paper next time and see how it goes. I watercoloured the gorgeous cherry blossoms. The background wash is a bit dodgy in a few places because I was working under a single 40 watt bulb using a waterbrush (not my favourite way to watercolour) with a baby and cat bouncing on the couch I was sitting on!! Still, I am pretty happy with it. I added some clear suki6 Spica pen to the centers but it didn’t show up very well. I tried using my pink Spica but it was much too bright and fortunately, it wiped off. I sure wish I had the NEW baby pink Spica!!  I cut the outer edge of the circle by hand because there are no Nesties that big but the center cut out perfectly with a Nestie. The gold edging is just a gold paint pen. I don’t even buy the Krylon one, just the Pilot version from Staples!

PLEASE play along! The whole team would love to see your work. Upload to your blog, PCP or SCS using keyword MTTSC25. Then link back to Madelynn’s Twinkling Tuesdays so we can all see your work! Be sure to visit all the TT members too and leave them some love! We all thrive on the comments you leave. Thanks!!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Baby Girl Miracle Gift Box

Anybody out there play along with the challenges on Stampin’ Out Alzheimer's? I only got a chance to play along with four, three in one card! YEAH! I just didn’t have much time this week. I didn’t manage to even get to the site until Tuesday because my iPhone wouldn’t connect to the site. Stupidly, I kept trying instead of using my laptop- DUH!! DH was crazy busy at work, basicallybaby ready set wrapcoming home to eat and fall asleep on the couch. Our baby HAS to  be watched ALL the time, no way can you be asleep. So, no crafting time.  ***SIGH***  This afternoon and evening I raced to get a couple things done, loading my last photo at 11:59! No kidding.

baby ready set wrap2 So this project was for the Timeless Template Challenge. When I make them, they aren’t exactly timeless as I prefer to trace them instead of printing on the cardstock. I like using scraps and they don’t feed through the printer so well! Part of the challenge was to use a clear element. Mine was quite the challenge in and of itself! I ran a piece of plastic packaging through my Cuttlebug using a textile folder. Then I cut it into a heart shape with a Cuttlebug heart die. baby ready set wrap3I  painted the back with pink acrylic paint, then wiped off the excess leaving paint only in the cracks. When I placed it on the green patterned paper, it kind of disappeared so I painted the back with white acrylic paint. It looked great but wasn’t white enough.

Here is where a not-so-clever move came in. Not wanting to get out the paint again since I had already washed the brushes, I tried adding white pigment ink to the back. Looked baby ready set wrap4 great but it didn’t dry! I added clear (why didn’t I use white??) EP to the back. I heated the heart but it started to flatten and lose it’s dry embossing! Bummer, I should have thought of that! The powder still wasn’t melted so I moved the heat gun further away but even so it started to shrink. AHHH! I eventually got the powder to melt and the plastic to flatten instead of curling but all the embossing was gone. Next time, NO HEATING!! It still makes for a pretty embellishment and I am happy with it.

Why is my description of my projects always a tale of my goofs  and efforts to fix them? I tried using a marker to edge my cardstock in pink around the handle punch out. I missed and baby ready set wrap5drew a huge line across the most prominent part of the handle. UGH!! So I added flowers to cover it forgetting that the side panels wrap over the handle. It still goes over obviously but it is tricky! Some things I got right? I like the sheep even though I couldn’t wait for the Liquid Appliqué to dry before heating to puff it and so their coats are a bit lumpy. Have you seen a real sheep? I see them every summer at the CNE, Canadian National Exhibition. Their coats are uneven! I really like the tag too. Two Melissa Frances stickers the same size, one on each side of a piece of chipboard the same size. (Stolen from the back of a Stampin’ Up paper pack.)

Enjoy, Rebecca

Clear Dollar Stamps June Guest Designer Application

Here it is! My card for my application. The rules for this Supply Challenge were as follows: Brads, Designer paper, Ribbon, 1 stamp set for images and sentiment or one stamp set and computer generated sentiment. Other suggestions: keep other embellishments to a minimum, use CD stamps of course.

I have been wanting Clear Dollar Stamps for ages; I have several sets on my wish list. I sadly have not gotten the $ for them yet. **SIGH**  So I hope they will forgive me and notice my entry anyway. TO THE JUDGES: I don’t know if you have time to read anyone’s text in their posts. But just in case you read this, I will really work hard to fulfill all responsibilities involved in being  your Guest Designer. Please see the rest of my blog or my SCS gallery (no fancy user name, just Rebecca Ednie). Thank you.
